- New recruits are forced to choose a religion and humanist isn't even an option. MAAF explains why this requirement should be removed and has posted a white house petition to sign (the White House server is slow. Please be patient.).
- Christian-nation proponents are again defending Christian shrines as war memorials, not at Camp Pendleton where Marine commanders are marching their units to a 13-foot Christian cross on federal land.
- MAAF has posted an open letter to chaplains to help speed support to atheists and humanists in need. View the latest local group update. The MAAF Chaplain Outreach and local network programs are in the news. on the front page of the New York Times, Stars & Stripes, and NCMAF national chaplains association.
- WWII pilot John Hormuth was interred with his wife in a humanist ceremony at Arlington. Against the family's wishes, religious prayers were delivered by the Arlington Lady. MAAF has received assurances from cemetery administration that an apology has been issued, that cemetery officials have been counseled, and that policies will be enforced in the future. Houston VA cemetery director Arleen Ocasio is under fire from Christian organizations and pro-Christian veterans groups after her rightful boundaries on private religious speech in government programs.
- The US Military Academy (West Point), US Air Force Academy, and US Naval Academy have collaborated with MAAF, local volunteers, cadets, and midshipmen to provide options for nontheists during sunday morning worship services. The US Air Force Academy is continuing to include MAAF in their reform efforts, resulting in updated policy and valuable religious respect training including atheists and continuing moves toward reform. These actions follow from the November 2010 Religious Respect Conference. Future changes are still needed, including implementation of programs, academic year support, and staff/faculty training.
- The military is promoting spiritual fitness as a method to reduce PTSD and suicide rates in the military. The tests and resulting training are missing the nontheist community within the military and need comprehensive reform to avoid unconstitutional promotion of religion through military channels and resources. MAAF continues to offer assistance if the military is open to reform. The Air Force at east is issuing more stringent policies to control command endorsement of religion.
- MAAF Praises the recent repeal of DADT and the upcoming implementation of the repeal. Actions to protect the implementation process, newly-out gays in the military, and the state-level National Guard are still needed. MAAF has issued a press release denouncing bureaucracy and sectarian influence related to DADT. This release follows up on the basic FAQ supporting open service for all and repeal of DADT that MAAF issued in May 2010.
- Chaplain Michael Milton reports on proselytism in his own military ministry and at the Army War College. MAAF calls for an investigation into his actions.
