MAAF Staff and Volunteer Opportunities

We need your help! MAAF is a large community with members all over the world. There are many programs, and we simply don't have the time and personnel to do as well as we would like. That's where you come in. We are seeking reliable representatives to volunteer time for MAAF initiatives. Write in to offer your support - MAAF Contact page. Note that these positions are just a few examples of what we may do. If you seek to carry out a specific project or portion of these responsibilities, don't hesitate to ask or suggest your own.

Discrete Projects

There may be problems to commit to a long term project, but here are some projects below that require a defined, short-term set of tasks. Especially for those requiring special skills, there may be opportunities for MAAF to pay fees. But we do appreciate volunteer assistance.

Community

Chapter Directors
If you don't already have a nontheist community in your area, apply for a MAAF Chapter. We generally only approve chapters located at a military installation. We highly encourage the chapter to affiliate directly with one of our civilian affiliates. These connections provide access to resources and greatly strengthen the community. MAAF Network

Conference Delegates
Although the MAAF President interacts with directly with our partner organizations, he can not attend every event. We seek members, on a case-by-case basis, to work at conferences on behalf of MAAF. At a minimum, you would be asked to bring and place MAAF brochures. These brochures would be provided. In addition, you may be asked to host a meeting. The meeting space and agenda would be coordinated by MAAF. You would be responsible for facilitating the discussion according to the agenda, answering questions as best you can, and gathering any feedback for MAAF.

Education

Media Coordinator
MAAF advertises both with paid advertisements and media spots. In addition, the MAAF Adopt the Media program invites submissions and support from MAAFers for local media outlets. This is a critical position as it both attracts members and educates the public. the Media Coordinator will also have a responsibility to reach out to MAAF partners for joint media opportunities. There are a number of positions available.

News Monitor
News of interest to members and news about members often appears on the net. MAAF needs help identifying, summarizing, and posting these stories to the website and the discussion list.

Service and Academy Liaisons
MAAF members either are or were in each of the services. We seek experts with an understanding of the structure, geography, trends, and regulations of each service. This will help MAAF and MAAF partners to interact with the services effectively. In addition, because of the problems at each of the Academies, we also seek specific academy liaisons as well.

Atheists in Foxholes list
Our atheists in foxholes list requires screening, data input, and database architecture assistance. It is currently HTML/CSS, but will be migrated to a PhP/MySQL format. Applicants will require those web development skills.

Speakers Bureau Coordinator and Speakers

Chaplain Outreach Director
Description: Chaplains hold significant power over the lives of nontheists within the military. Often, they ignore or openly work against our interests. It is the position of MAAF that Chaplains do this primarily because they do not understand our interests. MAAF has created a chaplain outreach program and seeks a director to expand this program. Additional aspects of the program may include gathering contact information for each of the chaplain branches and coordinating with the existing ecclesiastical endorsing agencies (NCMAF, NAE, ICECE, MA, NAJC, UUMM).

Veterans Support Coordinator
Veterans organizations, including the American Legion, AmVets, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and others, offer veterans services. We seek to ensure they provide these services to military members as well. Note that coordination with the Veterans Administration may also be included in this position.

Demographics Analyst
Description: MAAF is often asked for demographics about nontheists within the military. These demographics are available through government and military agencies as well as private research groups. In addition, certain agencies are known to collect skewed statistics and our own demographics could counterbalance those efforts.

Advocacy

Legal Coordinator
Although we are primarily a community organization, MAAF identifies and tracks a number of issues that require legal follow-up. The coordinator would preferably have good insight into legal terminology, military regulations, and the larger nontheist legal environment. The coordinator would identify member issues and match them up with the appropriate legal center of each of our partners.

Armed Forces Network Liaison
Description: AFN is military-sponsored and staffed programming serving military members, including us. We have received complaints about programming in the past and need your help to ensure AFN is providing Constitutional programming that services the entire military. The liaison will monitor and report on AFN programming, especially the Chaplain Spots. The liaison will also write letters to AFN to comment on programming as well as suggest MAAF-related programming to AFN. The liaison should preferably be located in Germany and have access to AFN programming.

Free Day Away Investigator
Description: Free Day Away is alleged to be a wildly unconstitutional program whereby Army trainees in Missouri are transported to an evangelical church for a day of food, fun, and Evangelical Christian indoctrination. We seek an investigator to go to Ft Leonard Wood, Missouri and gather information about these claims.

Leadership

MAAF Leadership Committee
The MAAF President has primary responsibility but requires input, advice, and assistance. In addition, concerns about financial outlays, new staff, and succession planning are best made with the input of others. Note that the Leadership Committee is by invitation only, generally to those who have shown their dedication to MAAF with previous volunteerism.
