Dear Mr. Torpy:
Thank you for sharing your concern.
The remarks Lt. Gen. Blum made in accepting the NAACP Meritorious
Service Award were intended to clearly illustrate the positive spirit of
camaraderie, human understanding and inclusion of our fine men and women in
the National Guard.
The words that you find objectionable were taken out of context in a news
article. There was, and is, no intent to offend anyone. These fine soldiers
and airmen who put their lives on the line to support and defend the
Constitution of the United States, know that our people of all philosophies
and convictions work together and count on each other, no matter what other
issues may sometimes divide people.
The context of these remarks was to illustrate that this becomes
especially clear in the stress of battle or hostile conditions. These issues
fade quickly and demonstrate that we respect all people of all races,
religions and ethnicities, and he can testify to this from personal
experience.
The National Guard force represents this great nation, and the
strength that comes from diversity. Your continued support of the National
Guard and all men and women in uniform is commendable.
Sincerely,
Michael Milord
Lieutenant Colonel
Air National Guard
of the United States
